In Montenegro, the labor force survey conducted by Monstat revealed that in the second quarter of this year, there were 319,800 active residents. Of these, 283,500 individuals were employed, making up 88.6% of the active population, while 36,300 people, or 11.4%, were unemployed.
The employment figure showed a 1.1% increase compared to the previous quarter and a 1.3% rise compared to the same quarter last year. Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals decreased by 4% from the first quarter of this year and by 12.7% compared to the same period last year.
The report also highlighted that the population outside the labor force, aged 15 to 89, numbered 179,900, representing a 0.6% decline from the previous quarter but a 1.2% increase year-on-year. The activity rate for this age group was 64%, with an employment rate of 56.7% and an unemployment rate of 11.4%.
Sector employment
The survey indicated that the majority of employed individuals, 76.7%, work in the service sector, while 19.1% are engaged in industry and construction, and 4.3% in agriculture, forestry, and fishing. In the second quarter, 10,000 unemployed individuals sought jobs for less than a year, 7,800 for up to two years, while over 50% (18,500) had been looking for work for two years or longer.
Men comprised more than half of the active population, totaling 178,100 or 55.7%, while women accounted for 141,700 or 44.3%. Among those outside the labor force, women represented 60.9% (109,600), while men made up 39.1% (70,300).
Of the total employed, 159,800 or 56.4% were men, and 123,700 or 43.6% were women. Among the unemployed, 18,200 or 50.1% were men, while 18,100 or 49.9% were women.
The largest segment of the active population consisted of individuals aged 25 to 49, totaling 199,900, whereas the highest number of those outside the labor force were aged 65 to 89, numbering 60,300.
Educational background
Regarding education, the majority of the active population had completed secondary school (61.6%), while 32.4% held university degrees and 6% only completed primary school. Among those outside the labor force, 54% had secondary education, 35% had primary education, and the remaining 11% held higher qualifications.
In the employed population, 61.1% had completed secondary school, 34% had higher education, and 4.9% had only primary education. Among the unemployed, 65.9% had secondary education, 19.9% had higher education, and 14.2% had only primary education.
Monstat collected this data through a survey involving 1,843 households across Montenegro, gathering demographic information for 4,892 household members, including labor activity details for 4,291 individuals aged 15 to 90.
