Žabljak, historically known for its winter season, has emerged as a popular summer tourist destination. Stojan Abazović, Director of the Žabljak Tourist Organization, emphasizes that the key to sustainable growth lies in smart investments and preserving the region’s natural beauty.
Summer tourism has surged, with July 2025 recording 46,000 overnight stays, a 16% increase over July 2024, and a 26% rise in the first six months compared to the previous year. Visitors are drawn to Durmitor’s scenic landscapes, outdoor activities like hiking, biking, horseback riding, canyoning, and water sports, as well as local cuisine.
Climate change poses challenges for winter tourism, with significantly fewer cold days and snowfall. Efforts are underway to implement artificial snow systems and upgrade ski infrastructure, including lifts and trails, while promoting backcountry skiing.
Abazović highlights the need for large, high-end hotels in Žabljak to support year-round tourism, including conference and wellness tourism. Current accommodations include over 1,000 private beds and around 700 hotel beds, with new developments like the Rezident Hotel and an upcoming five-star condo hotel expected to enhance the region’s capacity and attract more visitors.
