Montenegro and Italy are strengthening energy cooperation and infrastructure development to ensure stable electricity supply, advance renewable energy projects, and deepen economic ties. This was discussed during a meeting between Montenegro’s Minister of Energy and Mining, Admir Šahmanović, and Italy’s Minister of Energy, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, on the sidelines of the Gastech 2025 conference in Milan.
A key focus is the second submarine power cable between the two countries, which will reinforce Montenegro’s role as a regional energy hub. Montenegro’s transmission network is expected to be ready to accommodate the cable by the end of 2025, enabling faster implementation of new renewable energy projects. The first submarine cable has already generated significant revenue for Montenegro, with CGES earning €42 million in 2024 from cross-border capacity leasing.
The ministers agreed on a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to support electricity market integration, encourage Montenegro’s integration into the European energy system, facilitate knowledge exchange, and promote cooperation between Italian and Montenegrin energy stakeholders. The MoU is expected to be signed soon, marking a milestone in joint energy initiatives, particularly in renewable energy and transmission infrastructure.
Both ministers emphasized the potential for further cooperation in energy, as Italy seeks additional capacity. Montenegro’s participation at Gastech 2025 highlights its commitment to being an active participant in the global energy dialogue and advancing strategic projects that strengthen the energy partnership between Montenegro and Italy, benefiting the wider region.
