Austrian Ambassador to Montenegro, Christian Steiner, congratulated the government on successfully closing three negotiation chapters, highlighting the crucial role of the Ministry of Finance in the negotiation process, particularly in the areas of economy, customs, and markets.
He emphasized that Montenegro has Austria’s full support on its path to full European Union (EU) membership.
The Ministry of Finance reported that Minister Novica Vuković met with Ambassador Steiner to discuss enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
Vuković expressed gratitude for Austria’s continued support, especially in Montenegro’s European integration efforts. During their first official meeting, Vuković informed Steiner about the reforms implemented to improve the economic standard of Montenegro’s citizens. He also expressed hope for an increase in Austrian investments in the country, noting Austria’s significant economic presence through numerous successful companies operating in Montenegro.
The meeting also highlighted the benefit of Steiner’s knowledge of the region, given his previous diplomatic assignments in neighboring countries, which could contribute to speeding up the integration of the Western Balkans into the EU.
Both sides agreed on the importance of intensifying cooperation, particularly in tourism, economy, and cross-border cooperation. The significance of the “Friends of Enlargement” group, which includes Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Italy, Greece, Slovenia and Croatia, was also acknowledged as a solid foundation for future joint projects.
Steiner emphasized the importance of continuing economic dialogue, and he committed to working on strengthening it. The meeting concluded with a shared recognition of the need to further strengthen political, economic and cultural cooperation between Austria and Montenegro.
