Criticism mounts over UAE deal for Velika Plaža: ‘National treasure not for sale’

I fear that by voting in favor of the agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), members of Parliament will, in effect, commit an act of betrayal against Montenegro’s national interests. This law represents the pinnacle of a submissive relationship with foreign investors and a blow to the country’s sovereignty, as it essentially gives away our most strategic natural resource — the coastline — for decades to come.

This was stated by Boban Radević, a representative of the Free Montenegro party in the Capital City Assembly.

His remarks come ahead of today’s parliamentary vote on legislation that would allow a long-term lease of the Velika Plaža (Long Beach) in Ulcinj to a potential investor.

Radević called on all MPs to act responsibly and patriotically by voting against the proposed agreement.

“This is not about development — it is legalized land grabbing. Mohamed Alabbar and his associates, under the patronage of Prime Minister Spajić’s government and his international advisor Cecilia Malmström, are trying to seize Montenegrin land through laws tailored to serve their profits, at the expense of our people and future generations,” the statement said.

He emphasized that Montenegro needs investors who will work in the country’s interest, respect its laws, and preserve national resources — not partners who dictate legislation.

“There is no price at which Velika Plaža can be sold. It doesn’t belong to any individual — it is the wealth of all Montenegrin citizens. Anyone who raises their hand in support of this law today is signing off on betrayal. They should remember that well,” Radević concluded.
