Montenegrin airports will experience a reduction in winter flights compared to last year, as Airlines find it unprofitable to operate in Montenegro during the off-peak season.
From December 2-8, Podgorica Airport removed six flights, and Tivat Airport reduced three. This could prompt travelers to turn to neighboring airports. Officials from Airports of Montenegro (ACG) pointed out that Montenegro has not yet positioned itself as a key winter tourism destination in Europe, limiting airline interest.
ACG acknowledges citizen dissatisfaction but believes the situation will improve in the future with proper marketing and state support. The company proposes a model similar to other regional countries, where governments help fund airline routes to maintain regular winter flights.
From January to early December, ACG served over 2.8 million passengers, marking a 16% increase over last year and 8% over 2019. Despite the winter flight reductions, ACG remains hopeful that partnerships with European airlines, including British Airways, will strengthen Montenegro’s aviation connectivity in the long term.
