Montenegro sees 23% growth in foreign-owned companies in 2024, led by Turkey and Russia

In Montenegro, there were 29,960 companies with foreign ownership last year, representing a 23.4 percent increase compared to 2023, according to data from Monstat.

The largest number of active business entities with foreign ownership was in Podgorica, with 9,950 companies, accounting for 33.2 percent of the total, the statement said.

Following Podgorica, the municipalities of Budva and Bar had the next highest numbers.

Regarding the country of origin of the owners, the largest share of active foreign-owned companies came from Turkey, with 9,820 entities, or 32.8 percent, followed by Russia with 7,190 companies, or 24 percent. Serbia accounted for 3,220 companies, or 10.8 percent, and Ukraine had 1,070 companies, or 3.6 percent, statisticians reported.

By industry sector, the highest number of active foreign-owned companies was in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, totaling 7,140 companies. This was followed by the professional, scientific and technical activities sector, and the construction sector.
