Montenegro enhances railway infrastructure with significant funding alongside highway projects

Montenegro has recently obtained substantial financial resources for important railway projects, in addition to the support received for its highway project, as announced by Transport Minister Maja Vukićević.

During a meeting focused on enhancing multimodal connectivity in the Danube region, Vukićević engaged with the European Commission’s DG MOVE representative to discuss the administrative progress towards finalizing the railway legislation. This legislation is largely aligned with relevant European Union regulations, aiming to open the market, recognize foreign operators, and foster closer collaboration between local infrastructure management and foreign administrations. The goal is to improve the organization of cargo and passenger transport.

Among the domestic projects highlighted by Vukićević was the status of the Bar-Boljare highway, specifically the second phase involving the Mateševo-Andrijevica segment. A pre-qualification tender for selecting the construction contractor is currently underway, with backing from the European Commission and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

Vukićević emphasized that investment in railway infrastructure is part of a broader modernization effort. Enhancements to the Bar port and the surrounding railway network are expected to yield long-term positive effects for Montenegro and the neighboring countries connected to its rail system.

Marian-Jean Marinescu, the European Commission’s Coordinator for the Western Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean Corridor, noted that the Commission continues to fully support Montenegro’s infrastructure development projects.
