Montenegro’s state-owned power company, EPCG, will launch a tender in the next 15 days for the construction of two large Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), worth nearly €50 million. The systems, each with a capacity of 30 MW/120 MWh (total 240 MWh), will be built at the Željezara site to improve electricity supply stability, integrate renewable energy faster, and boost energy independence.
The tender will be open to all companies and consortia meeting Montenegro’s public procurement requirements, with bidders needing experience in building BESS facilities in the EU in the past five years. Once equipment is delivered, the plants should be operational within ten months.
The project will allow EPCG to store excess energy during low-demand periods and release it during peak times, reducing costly electricity imports and optimizing existing power plants. It will also support the integration of new solar and wind farms, increase grid stability, and serve as backup in case of outages.
EPCG plans further BESS investments in 2026 and 2027. The project will be financed through bank loans, with repayment starting after the systems become operational.
