In Montenegro, there are a total of 26.71 thousand agricultural holdings, according to preliminary results from the 2023 Agricultural Census.
The Statistical Office of Montenegro (Monstat) reported that in the previous year, agricultural holdings used 248.23 thousand hectares of agricultural land.
The total number of livestock on these holdings included 68.6 thousand cattle, 167.34 thousand sheep, 28.18 thousand goats, 52.27 thousand pigs, and 1.36 million poultry.
The Agricultural Census was conducted from October 1 to December 1 of the previous year, in accordance with the Law on Agricultural Census and applicable regulations from the European Parliament, Council of the European Union, and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
The preliminary results contain basic data on the number of holdings, the head of the family farm, the agricultural land used, the livestock population, and machinery (tractors). These figures may be subject to change before the final results are published.
Statisticians explained that due to changes in international and national legislation since the 2010 Agricultural Census, certain data were recalculated to ensure comparability with current criteria and EU standards.
