The Central Bank of Montenegro (CBCG) has extended the operating hours of its payment system until 8:00 PM. From now on, transfers made on working days up to 7:30 PM (for amounts up to €1,000) and up to 8:00 PM (for amounts over €1,000) will be processed and credited to recipients the same day.
This change, introduced under amendments to the payment system rulebook approved on July 9, aims to increase efficiency, speed, and accessibility of payment services for citizens and businesses. The RTGS system (Real-Time Gross Settlement) now ensures immediate crediting for transfers over €1,000 made until 8:00 PM, while the DNS system (Deferred Net Settlement) has been expanded with six daily clearing cycles for transfers up to €1,000, enabling same-day processing for payments made by 7:30 PM.
The improvements allow faster access to funds for individuals, more efficient cash flow management for businesses, and quicker inflows for sectors such as tourism and e-commerce. CBCG said the changes align Montenegro’s payment infrastructure with EU standards and best international practices.
Starting October 20, the payment system will also operate on weekends and public holidays, adding 118 working days annually. These upgrades pave the way for a TIPS Clone system from July 2026, enabling real-time, 24/7, year-round payments for individuals and businesses.
