Montenegro’s housing statistics: Census reveals construction trends and material use

According to data from the 2023 census, Montenegro has 285.73 thousand residential apartments, covering a total area of 21.92 million square meters.

Of the total number of residential apartments in Montenegro, 179.48 thousand (or 62.8%) have exterior walls made predominantly or entirely of blocks.

“48.99 thousand (or 17.1%) of the apartments have exterior walls made of brick, 24.74 thousand (or 8.7%) are made of stone, while 29.9 thousand (or 10.5%) have exterior walls made predominantly or entirely from other materials,” stated the announcement from Montenegro’s Statistical Office (Monstat).

For 2.63 thousand (or 0.9%) apartments, no data was available on the material used for the exterior walls.

Of the total number of residential apartments in Montenegro, the highest number—124.48 thousand (or 43.6%)—are located on the ground floor, while the smallest number, 340 (or 0.1%), are in the basement.

The majority of the apartments were built between 1981 and 2000, while the least were constructed between 1919 and 1945.
