Montenegro’s Tax Administration outlines reform plans in meeting with U.S. Ambassador

Sava Laketić, the Acting Director of the Tax Administration, met with U.S. Ambassador to Montenegro Judy Rising Reinke to discuss future reform plans aimed at enhancing the agency’s operations. The proposed reforms focus on digitizing business processes, increasing transparency towards businesses and citizens, and developing human resources within the administration.

Laketić highlighted that these reforms would lead to a more comprehensive taxpayer database, help reduce the shadow economy, and transition informal economic activities into formal channels.

“The aim of the Tax Administration is to create a modernized administrative system based on risk analysis, which will improve tax collection efficiency and encourage voluntary compliance with tax laws,” he stated.

Ambassador Reinke voiced her support for the U.S. commitment to the implementation of these tax reforms, which are intended to benefit both citizens and the economy.

Both officials acknowledged that structural instability has adversely affected the institution’s effectiveness and expressed optimism that the planned reforms will foster the development and stability of Montenegro’s economy, as reported by the Tax Administration.

The meeting also included Deputy Ambassador Nikol Otala and members of the embassy’s economic team.
