On July 13, Monteput celebrates two major anniversaries: three years since the opening of the priority Bar–Boljare highway section and 20 years since the Sozina Tunnel began operations. These projects are described as cornerstones of modern, safe, and efficient road transport in Montenegro.

Highway usage and safety improvements

Since the Smokovac–Mateševo highway section opened in 2022, more than 7.7 million vehicles have used it, including 2.9 million in 2024 and over 1.45 million in the first half of 2025 alone.

Traffic safety has improved significantly, with annual incident numbers falling from 50 to 42, and 33 reported so far in 2024. Monteput attributes this to advanced traffic management systems, modern equipment, and rapid-response services.

Toll revenue and digital solutions

Electronic toll collection (ETC) has seen a steep rise—from 68,000 users in 2022 to over 202,000 in 2023, and 281,464 ETC passes in the first half of 2025. Monteput has introduced video tolling based on license plate recognition and launched a mobile app for account management.

Toll revenues have reached €30.75 million since the highway’s opening, including €5.2 million in the first half of 2025—a 15% year-over-year increase.

Future projects

Monteput is preparing new strategic routes, including sections of the Adriatic–Ionian highway and further extensions of the Bar–Boljare highway. A key priority is the next section, Mateševo–Andrijevica.

Monteput CEO Milan Ljiljanić highlighted the encouraging trends: increased traffic, fewer incidents, broader digital integration, and a €5 million profit in 2024.

20 years of Sozina Tunnel

Since opening in 2005, the Sozina Tunnel has served as a vital north-south link, handling over 50 million vehicles. In the past three years, over €3.36 million has been invested in its modernization, including pavement repairs, lighting upgrades, and enhanced video surveillance.

Monteput reaffirmed its commitment to modernizing infrastructure, improving safety and user comfort, and continuing strategic development with support from national and international partners.
