Pljevlja projects key to Montenegro’s energy transition and cleaner air

Montenegrin Minister of Energy and Mining Admir Šahmanović visited Pljevlja today to inspect works on the ecological reconstruction of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant, the city’s district heating project, and the relocation of the Ćehotina riverbed.

Šahmanović highlighted the strategic importance of these projects for aligning with EU standards, improving air quality in Pljevlja, and ensuring the long-term stability of Montenegro’s energy system. He noted that district heating will bring residents warmer homes and a healthier environment.

According to the minister, 60% of the riverbed relocation has been completed, with full resources deployed to meet deadlines. He emphasized the need for strong coordination between the coal mine and the thermal power plant as part of the country’s gradual energy transition, while the ecological overhaul of the plant provides stability and time to develop renewable sources.
