Installation of Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) devices, which enable pilots to read the direct distance between aircraft and the device on the ground, began at the Tivat airport approach, according to the Air Traffic Control of Serbia and Montenegro (SMATSA).
They also announced that the installation of a second DME device at the Podgorica airport approach is planned for next week.
Both devices are being provided by the renowned European company Thales, and this conventional air navigation system is already in use at the approaches of major airports across Europe.
The project is expected to be completed by March 15.
The installation will be carried out by SMATSA’s aviation technical experts with support from the equipment manufacturer’s representatives.
Before both devices become operational at locations near Montenegrin airports, a Commissioning Flight Check will take place, where the new equipment will be tested using a specialized calibration aircraft for radio navigation systems.
With this implementation, the new equipment will replace the existing system, which has been in use since 2010.
The investment, worth around half a million euros, is being funded by SMATSA in line with its investment and financial plans.
