The Ministry of Ecology, Spatial Planning and Urbanism published the Draft Report on Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment – DPP Brskovo only on April 24th this year. And considering that the Swiss company has invested more than 15 million euros in research, the pressure to open the mine, despite the opposition of the population, will probably be great.
The idea of reopening the Brskovo mine in Mojkovac dates back to 2010, when the Government of Montenegro and the Australian company “North Mining” signed a concession agreement for detailed geological research and exploitation of sulphide polymetallic ore for a period of 30 years.
Since 2010, several more contract annexes have been signed, and in 2018, the Australian company transferred its ownership stake to the Swiss company Fusion Fund I AG, which continued research and now wants to open the “Brskovo Mine” mine.
Three possible scenarios are mentioned in the draft of the Detailed Spatial Plan (DPP). The first one does not mean the opening of a mine, but the development of that area in accordance with the purposes of tourism, agriculture, archaeological sites and cultural monuments. The second envisages the opening of a mine and the creation of a conventional flotation tailings pond, while the third, which is given priority, implies the opening of a mine with the construction of a waste management facility.
