Damjan Ćulafić, Montenegro’s Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development, recently met with German Ambassador Peter Felten to discuss strategies for advancing the northern region of Montenegro.
During the meeting, Ćulafić outlined his vision for the region’s development, emphasizing the critical role of cooperation with local governments. He stressed the importance of local authorities being proactive in developing detailed project and technical documentation necessary for attracting investment.
Ćulafić also updated Ambassador Felten on ongoing efforts to define the status of Ulcinj Saltworks and the challenges associated with establishing an effective management model for this important site. He expressed his commitment to facilitating discussions between the Municipality of Ulcinj and the Ministry of Finance to find a viable solution that balances local community interests with the long-term goals of Montenegro.
Highlighting the ecological significance of the saltworks for both Montenegro and the broader region, Ćulafić thanked Germany for its substantial support. This support has included expert assistance, financial contributions, and equipment for maintaining the saltworks.
The Minister emphasized that fulfilling obligations related to Chapter 27 on environmental protection is crucial for Montenegro’s EU accession process. He announced plans to enhance the administrative capabilities of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) and to focus on raising awareness and education regarding environmental protection.
Ambassador Felten acknowledged the long-term nature of these efforts, citing Germany as a positive example in tackling climate change. He welcomed the Minister’s commitment to strengthening the ministry’s capabilities, particularly in the context of global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. He expressed hope that Montenegro, with EU support, will lead in setting ambitious emission reduction targets.
Both Ćulafić and Felten agreed that the upcoming environmental ministers’ meeting in October in Hamburg, part of the Berlin Process, could provide crucial momentum for implementing the “Green Agenda” established for the Western Balkans in 2020.
In conclusion, both officials agreed that mutual openness and concrete actions are essential for maintaining trust and advancing Montenegro’s progress toward EU integration.
