Montenegro Initiates Customs Technology Overhaul with U.S. Partnership

Montenegro is embarking on a significant transformation of its border control systems, shifting from traditional security measures to a comprehensive logistics and technology framework in collaboration with the United States. This initiative, which commenced on August 24, 2026, aims to modernize customs operations through the implementation of a national integrated cargo-scanning and border-control system at key trade gateways.

The proposed system will not only enhance scanning capabilities but also integrate inspection solutions across Montenegro’s borders with neighboring countries, including Albania, Kosovo, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia, as well as the Port of Bar. A central command center in Podgorica will oversee these operations, marking a shift towards a national customs-technology platform.
