The Montenegrin government has sanctioned a tourism and heritage initiative exceeding €7 million aimed at revitalizing Brskovo, located near Mojkovac. This project seeks to transform the historic mining and trading settlement into a prominent tourist destination in the northern region of the country.

This initiative will center on the historic town and fortress of Brskovo, which was a significant hub for mining, commerce, and coin production during the medieval period in the Balkans.

The government views this development as part of a larger strategy to broaden the tourism offerings in northern Montenegro, moving beyond traditional winter resorts and nature-based activities.

Historically, Mojkovac has attracted less tourism investment compared to other locations such as Kolašin, Žabljak, and coastal areas, despite its strategic positioning amid major mountain ranges and national parks.

The proposed investment aims to establish a cultural-tourism route that integrates mining heritage with archaeology and outdoor activities.

The economic implications for the local community could be substantial. Enhancing heritage tourism may bolster sectors such as accommodation, dining, guiding services, transportation, and support for local producers if Brskovo becomes part of broader tourism itineraries.

This project aligns with Montenegro’s overarching goal of reducing the economic disparity between its coastal regions and the less developed northern areas, which face challenges such as limited private investment and population decline.

The ultimate economic impact will hinge on effective implementation, including improvements in visitor infrastructure, accessibility, marketing efforts, and connections with existing tourism sites around Mojkovac, Kolašin, and Durmitor.
