The municipality of Kolašin in northern Montenegro is set to embark on a significant tourism infrastructure project with the construction of a €101 million cable car. This initiative aims to connect the town directly to nearby ski resorts, marking one of the largest investments in the region’s winter tourism sector. Local officials have confirmed that funding is secured within the capital budget, and the project is now entering the tendering and implementation phase.

The planned cable car system will link Kolašin with the ski areas of Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600, featuring intermediate stations along the route. Vasilije Ivanović, Vice President of the Kolašin Municipality, stated that all necessary conditions for proceeding with the tender for construction contractors have been met. The municipality anticipates that the cable car will be operational within two to three years as part of a broader strategy to develop regional tourism.

Ivanović highlighted the project as a transformative economic opportunity for Kolašin, describing it as “the most important development in Kolašin’s history in terms of investment value and scale.” By providing direct access from the town center to ski slopes, Kolašin aims to position itself as a key regional tourism hub, catering to both winter sports enthusiasts and off-season visitors.

The €101 million investment is part of Montenegro’s capital budget and will be executed in stages over the upcoming years. Officials have indicated that all procedural and regulatory hurdles have been addressed, with preparations for the tender process approaching completion.

Local tourism authorities have noted favorable snow conditions and a rise in visitor interest during the current winter season as factors contributing to the project’s timely launch. Although it is early in the season, initial data suggest increased demand compared to previous years, fostering optimism about enhancing Kolašin’s appeal as a winter tourism destination.

The cable car will be integrated into a broader suite of infrastructural improvements in the area. Alongside the lift infrastructure, initiatives are in place to enhance access roads, parking facilities, and visitor services to accommodate expected growth in both domestic and international tourist arrivals.

Montenegro has been actively working to diversify its tourism offerings beyond summer coastal attractions, with an emphasis on winter sports infrastructure as a strategic priority. The substantial investments in Kolašin’s skiing facilities and related transport links reflect ongoing policy efforts aimed at broadening seasonal tourism and fostering regional economic development.

While local officials acknowledge challenges such as construction logistics in mountainous areas and ensuring environmental sustainability, they view this project as a strong commitment to establishing Kolašin as a competitive year-round destination.
