The winter season at the Savin Kuk ski resort in Montenegro, located near Žabljak, has recorded robust visitor traffic and consistent ski pass sales since its reopening on January 12. Data from local tourism authorities and Turistički Centar Durmitor indicate that approximately 4,500 ski passes were sold, with total guest visits reaching around 9,000 during the initial weeks of operation. These figures suggest that demand is comparable to last year’s winter season.

Statistics from local tourist organizations show that January’s occupancy rates and visitor numbers mirrored those of the previous year, attracting tourists from over 30 countries. Recent snowfall and favorable weather conditions have enhanced skiing opportunities, particularly on weekends. However, operators highlight that sustained snowfall will be crucial for maintaining visitor interest throughout February and beyond.

This season’s ski pass pricing remains largely unchanged from prior years, with daily adult tickets priced at approximately €16 and children’s tickets at around €10. Season and multi-day passes provide similar value. To encourage local engagement, residents of Žabljak and nearby areas can benefit from discounted rates and free parking.

Despite positive visitor statistics, local tourism officials and operators emphasize significant infrastructure challenges affecting the development of winter tourism in Žabljak. The director of the town’s Tourist Organisation pointed out an urgent need for increased hotel capacity, renovation of the main Savin Kuk chairlift, and restoration or replacement of smaller lifts to enhance the competitiveness of the ski destination and encourage longer stays beyond weekend visitors.

Industry stakeholders advocate for investments in upgraded lift systems, expanded lodging options, and additional amenities. Such enhancements could allow Žabljak to capture a greater share of regional winter tourism demand while leveraging its natural advantages, including its location within Durmitor National Park and a reputation for reliable snow conditions. Economic benefits from these improvements may include extended average stays, increased spending on ancillary services, and job creation in hospitality sectors.

As the winter season continues, organizers are planning further events such as the Durmitor Winter RUN, a trail racing event that has already attracted over a hundred participants. This initiative aims to diversify winter tourism offerings beyond traditional alpine sports.

While current sales data and visitor numbers reflect ongoing interest in Savin Kuk’s skiing facilities, local leaders and industry representatives assert that strategic investments in infrastructure are essential to enhance Žabljak’s competitiveness and fully realize its potential as a year-round mountain tourism destination.
