The Ministry of Public Works in Montenegro has initiated a tender process on 11 July for the design and construction of artificial reservoirs aimed at supporting snowmaking operations at Ski Centre Kolašin 1600. The announcement did not disclose the contract value.
This investment seeks to mitigate reliance on natural snowfall, thereby enhancing the reliability of winter operations. The need for such measures has become more pressing due to fluctuations in temperature and inconsistent snowfall patterns, which pose risks to the financial viability of mountain tourism assets.
The overall commercial viability of the project will be influenced by various factors, including the capacity of the reservoirs, water availability, pumping needs, electricity consumption, and the extent of ski terrain that can be effectively covered. While snowmaking infrastructure can prolong the operational days of ski facilities, it also entails increased energy and maintenance costs, necessitating careful planning regarding environmental impact and water management.
