Montenegro Airports are ramping up efforts to improve the country’s air connectivity by attracting major international airlines. In addition to ongoing initiatives, including the opening of a base with two Wizz Air aircraft in Podgorica for the summer of 2026, the company is in the final stages of negotiations with British Airways and Volotea.

According to the Ex-YU Aviation portal, the talks with British Airways are focused on establishing a direct flight route from London Heathrow Airport to Podgorica or Tivat.

“We have clearly shown our British partners that the Montenegrin market has enormous potential. The interest is significant, and introducing a direct route to Heathrow would be a major step forward for our air connectivity,” said Roko Tolić, Executive Director of Montenegro Airports.

British Airways had planned to launch a seasonal flight between Heathrow and Podgorica in 2020, but the flights were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the route was initially scheduled to start in the summer of 2021, its launch was delayed.

“The renewed interest from British Airways in Montenegro is a strong signal to the market and would encourage other major traditional carriers to enter the market,” said Montenegro Airports officials.

In parallel with these negotiations, the operator is actively working on establishing new international routes. Planned destinations from Podgorica and Tivat include Marseille (Volotea), Amsterdam (Transavia), Basel (easyJet), Antalya (SunExpress), Glasgow and Liverpool (Jet2.com), as well as Hamburg, Hanover, and Düsseldorf (Eurowings). Montenegro Airports expect these new routes to be launched during the summer season of 2026.

During the current summer season of 2025, Air Serbia is the largest carrier in the Montenegrin market with over 400,000 available seats, followed by Air Montenegro and Wizz Air. The most available seats from Montenegro this season are to Belgrade, followed by Istanbul and Vienna.
