Montenegro has reestablished seasonal international ferry routes connecting Budva and Kotor with Dubrovnik, aimed at bolstering regional transport connections and supporting the summer tourism sector. This initiative is part of the country’s strategy to enhance travel options during peak tourist seasons.
Filip Radulović, Montenegro’s Minister of Maritime Affairs, noted that the revival of these ferry services is a significant enhancement in regional mobility and will boost the competitiveness of Montenegro’s tourism industry. The new routes are anticipated to serve as a viable alternative to road travel, especially during the busy summer months when border crossings between Montenegro and Croatia often face heavy traffic congestion.
The renewed ferry connections link two key tourist hubs in Montenegro with Dubrovnik, a prominent destination in the Adriatic. These routes are expected to facilitate improved tourist mobility, additional travel choices for visitors, and enhanced tourism flow across the southern Adriatic region.
During the peak summer season, the Budva–Dubrovnik service will operate six times per week, doubling its frequency from the previous year. Meanwhile, the Kotor–Dubrovnik route will run three times weekly, increasing connectivity for travelers between Montenegro’s Bay of Kotor and Croatia’s southern coastline. These services are scheduled to operate until 30 September, with both morning and afternoon departures catering to tourists and transit passengers alike.
This expansion aligns with Montenegro’s ongoing efforts to diversify transport options along its coastline while alleviating seasonal pressures on road infrastructure. Long wait times at border crossings between Montenegro and Croatia have become a common issue during summer, particularly on the coastal route linking the Bay of Kotor to Dubrovnik. By providing maritime passenger services, the country aims to ease congestion and enhance the overall visitor experience.
The reopening of these routes is also indicative of a broader regional movement towards enhancing short-distance maritime transport across the Adriatic.
